Tuscany, Italy

May 2016

I recently had the pleasure of visiting 2 fabulous properties in the Tuscan countryside, I had already visited the Italian Lakes but very much wanted to explore a different part of Italy.

My first stop was the fabulous Villa di Piazanno near Cortona, Arezzo.  A former hunting manor built in the 1500’s.

Bought by the Wimpole family in 1989 and opened for business the following year this is small luxury family hotel. Most of the rooms are situated in the main building while some new additions added over the last 16 years to the outer farm buildings. Rooms range from their lead in classic category, up to deluxe, superior and Junior suite (some rooms also interconnect) They even have a 2 cottages in tucked away in the gardens, ideal for honeymooners.

The gardens are stunning with far reaching views of the Tuscan countryside and there is a beautiful terrace overlooking a pool. They offer wine tasting in their own cellars and also have an in house cookery school. They can also arrange walking tours, excursions and even have some bikes for guests to use on the local biking trails.

In the summer time they serve light lunches and dinners on the terrace and in the cooler month’s meals are served in the dining room. I can personally vouch that food was amazing!! Also during summer they have a number of special events such as Jazz evenings and informal BBQ’s.

The hotel is on the Tuscan/Umbrian border close to the beautiful town of Cortona, a five-minute drive from Piazanno. There is plenty of places nearby to explore Pienza, Montepulciano, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Deruta, Gubbio, Assisi are just a few of the nearby attractions.

There are direct flights to Pisa from both Manchester & Liverpool.
