The hotel is located approx. 45 mins from Cancun airport – a very easy drive.  Our private minivan had cold water, juice and a lovely driver, who gave us lots of tips and information about the area.

It’s a big hotel, alongside it’s adjoining sister hotel, the family friendly Esmeralda, so can take a day or two to find your way around!

I was travelling with my (grown up) daughter, so had requested twin beds.  Unfortunately, the hotel only has a handful of twins, so they kindly upgraded to a One Bedroom Master Suite (although still with one bed).  We could have had the sofa-bed made up in the living room, but the bed was so big it wasn’t necessary.  The Suite had a fabulous bathroom, separate living/dining room with kitchen & huge balcony with jacuzzi.

If I was was to return, I would definitely go for the Royal Service – this is a stylish upgrade, which makes the holiday really special – dedicated check in lounge, with drinks and snacks throughout the day.  Butler service, a separate pool, also with swim up bar and a dedicated restaurant (La Palapa) for breakfast and lunch, as well as a separate area on the beach.

In addition to our shared pool the hotel has a large main pool, with swim up bar, which was great for people watching.  (It happened to be Spring Break while we were there, which I probably wouldn’t recommend if you’re over 40!  Great for people watching though from our luxurious cabana, sipping a strawberry daquiri).

The beach is very well maintained, although as with many hotels along the Riviera Maya/Playa del Carmen, it does suffer from excess seaweed – the hotel has their own little diggers & team of beach cleaners, who are constantly cleaning up, so in my opinion, it wasn’t a big problem.

The hotel is very environmentally conscientious – no straws, re-usable plastic glasses around the pool and even the seaweed is recycled!

For me, one of the best things about this hotel was their range of dining options.  As well as several adult only options in La Perla, you also have access to the restaurants in La ere was so much choice: Mexican, Italian, Sushi, Teppanyaki, Mediterranean, Indian, Latin Fusion…the list goes on. What impressed me though was the standard of the food and service – mainly a la carte, with indoor & outdoor dining options, you would never get bored here.  There’s also a great choice of bars with great atmosphere.

The evening entertainment was impressive too, from singers and bands, West End shows – something for everyone.  My favourite was Jersey Boys.

There’s also a fabulous YHI Spa and Fitness Club – perfect for guests needing relaxation and rejuvenation. Awaiting guests at YHI Spa is a full service beauty salon, fourteen massage cabins, wet and dry saunas. In the Fitness Center guests will find state-of-the-art workout equipment, experienced trainers, group studio classes and even one-on-one individual wellness programs. YHI and the Fitness Center were designed to exceed guests’ mind-body goals and truly help them disconnect and enjoy their time at Paradisus Playa Del Carmen.

If you  want to take a break from all that the hotel has to offer, head into Playa del Carmen – a 5 min taxi ride away.  Lots of shops, both high end & local/souvenir offerings, with plenty of bars, restaurants & atmosphere!
